Darjeeling in November: What It's Really Like

If you ask us when to visit Darjeeling, November is one of the first months we mention. The rain is gone, the air is sharp and clean, and the mountains finally come out from behind the clouds. It's also cold, especially before sunrise, so pack for that.

Here's what to expect, based on what we see with our guests every year.

The weather

Days are usually pleasant, around 10–17°C. Nights drop to about 3–8°C, and it feels colder when the wind picks up. These are normal ranges, not a forecast, and higher or more exposed spots will be colder.

The mornings are the best part and the coldest part. By afternoon you'll be carrying your jacket. By 5 pm you'll want it back on.

Will it be clear? Often, but never guaranteed. If seeing Kanchenjunga matters to you, don't plan a single sunrise and hope. Give yourself two or three mornings.

What to wear: Layers. A warm jacket, a sweater, thermals if you feel the cold, a cap, gloves and a scarf for sunrise, and shoes with proper grip. The roads and steps here are steep. Keep a small rain jacket in your bag, because a shower can still surprise you.

Is it crowded?

Some weeks, yes. Early November can be busy around Diwali. Weekends and long weekends fill up hotels and taxis fast.

Mid-week visits are calmer, and an early start helps everywhere. Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop and the toy train are all busiest in the middle of the morning, so we usually get guests out earlier.

What we'd actually do

1. Tiger Hill sunrise. Yes, it means a very early start in the cold. On a clear morning, though, watching the sun hit Kanchenjunga is worth it, and sometimes Everest shows up too. Expect a crowd at the viewpoint. Dress warmer than you think you need to.

2. Batasia Loop and Ghoom. Easy to combine with Tiger Hill on the way back. There's a garden, a Gorkha war memorial and, if you time it right, the toy train coming round the loop.

3. The toy train. It's slow, bumpy and charming, and a lot of people love it for exactly those reasons. Check the current timetable before you plan around it.

4. Happy Valley Tea Estate. November isn't the main plucking season, so don't expect the full spring or summer experience. Call ahead to confirm the factory is open for visits. Even if it isn't, a good cup of Darjeeling tea somewhere in town is never wasted.

5. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. They're next to each other, so do both on one morning. The zoo has red pandas and snow leopards. The HMI museum is great if you like mountaineering history. Confirm opening days first.

6. Chowrasta and Mall Road. Not a "sight", just the place to wander, drink something hot and watch the town. Go in the late afternoon. Bring a jacket for the evening.

7. Japanese Peace Pagoda. Quieter than most places on this list. Go in daylight and give yourself extra travel time.

8. Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park. The drive takes a while on winding roads, and water flow is lower after the monsoon. Worth it if you have half a day spare. If you're short on time, skip it.

9. Eat well. Momo with spicy chutney, thukpa when it's cold, tea, and coffee with something from a local bakery.

If you have more than three days

Take a day out of town. Mirik has Sumendu Lake and tea gardens. Lamahatta and Lepchajagat are for pine forests and quiet. Takdah is for tea gardens and a slower pace. Views depend on the weather at all of them, so don't make them a Kanchenjunga gamble.

A simple 3-day plan

Day 1: Tiger Hill sunrise, then Batasia Loop and Ghoom. Toy train if the schedule suits, then Chowrasta and dinner in town.

Day 2: Zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in the morning, Peace Pagoda in the afternoon, then a café or the market.

Day 3: Tea estate if it's open, Rock Garden or a day trip to Lamahatta or Takdah, then shopping for tea before dinner.

Want it slower? Spend Day 3 in town and skip the long drive.

Getting here

Most people fly into Bagdogra or arrive by train at NJP and take a taxi up through Siliguri. Fog or a landslide can slow things down, so don't book a tight connection on the same day.

We run car rentals and transfers from both.

Quick tips

  1. Start early. The mornings are the best time for views.
  2. Carry some cash for small shops.
  3. Short distances take a long time on these roads, so don't over-pack your day.
  4. Check timings for the train, tea estates and museums before you go.
  5. Book stays and transport early for weekends and holidays.
  6. Keep a plan B for cloudy days: tea, museums, cafés.

Is November worth it?

Yes, as long as you accept the cold and don't treat the mountain views as guaranteed. Bring warm layers, keep your plans flexible, and give yourself a few mornings.
